Ep. #328: Jessy Lanza

Jessy Lanza is an acclaimed and alluring electronic pop songwriter based in Hamilton, Ontario. Along with her frequent collaborator Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys, Lanza has released two stunning records: 2013’s Pull My Hair Back and 2016’s Oh No, which were both shortlisted for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize and are each available via the Hyperdub label. Lanza was in Guelph for the underground arts and music extravaganza known as Kazoo! Fest recently and we caught up in a reverb-rich church basement to discuss things like studying jazz, Jill Scott and Patrice Rushen, stress and anxiety, European spas and Canada’s place in the world, Grandad’s Donuts in Hamilton, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.

Ep. #311: Robbie Fulks

Robbie Fulks is a brilliant singer and songwriter who is based just outside of Chicago, Illinois. His latest album is Upland Stories, which was nominated for two Grammy Awards at the 2017 ceremony, and was released by Bloodshot Records where it earned its spot on ‘best of 2016’ album lists compiled by Rolling Stone, NPR, the Guardian, Salon, Chicago Tribune, and more. Upland Stories is certainly a favourite around my house so I made an effort to connect with Robbie recently and he and I discussed things like the way people listen to music and each other these days, his interest in the Second City and teaching Tina Fey how to play guitar, talking with Trump people, working with Steve Albini for almost 20 years, seeing Bruno Mars and Beyoncé live at the Grammys ceremony, what the word ‘schmoz” means, and much, more. Sponsored by the Bookshelf, Pizza Trokadero, and Planet Bean Coffee.

Ep. #203: Elaquent

Elaquent is a hip-hop artist and producer based in Guelph, Ontario. An underground hero among beatmakers and rabid fans, Elaquent is renowned for his infectious, soulful but off-kilter compositions that recall aspects of Dilla and DJ Premier but are still wholly unique. Endlessly prolific, Elaquent’s brand new album is called Good Karma, it’s out now via Huh, What & Where, and it’s prompted him to play live, including solo and collaborative sets in his hometown at the Hillside Festival between July 24 and 26. Here, Elaquent and I discuss being rusty, making up your skillset on your own, plant pathology, Spanish and French, the Spanish student becomes the computer teacher, Meek Mill and Drake and ghostwriting/producing in hip-hop, Dr. Dre is a heartbreaker, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, Action Bronson and Ghostface Killah, pro wrestling, Good Karma and positive vibes, living in a town like Guelph, playing the Hillside Festival for the first time, jamming with Daniel Lanois, Nels Cline Singers, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lee Reed, and Jason Wilson & Pee Wee Ellis, the song “You’ve Changed,” and that was that.
