Ep. #287: Fake Limbs

Fake Limbs are a noisy rock band who hail from the west side of Chicago, Illinois. Known for creating a kind of “social justice street rock” that’s exhilarating and outspoken, the band formed in 2011 and have released three acclaimed full-length albums, including 2016’s Matronly, which is out now via Don Giovanni Records. Fake Limbs have been on the road a bunch of late and, before their recent show at the Silver Dollar in Toronto, lead singer Stephen Sowley and I ate some pizza at Fresca, just west of College and Spadina, and then we talked about his time in Toronto and tour managing, Jenny Hval, Screaming Females don’t really need roadies, driving and sleeping in cars and planes, Brendan Fraser and The Mummy, Danny Brown’s leather sleep mask, flight recliners, Ted, Colin Atrophy’s Slice Harvester, Fresca Pizza in Toronto, Chicago and Montreal, living in upstate New York, Second City and comedy, The Blues Brothers, not from Chicago, the Cubs’ World Series win, loser town, a goat and Steve Bartman, baseball points, a momentary Sowley curse, loving the Cubs and Wrigley Field and Toronto Blue Jays fans, so Grohl, working at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini, studio managing, encountering Iggy and the Stooges within weeks of taking a job at EA, the Breeders, working at Reckless Records, cashing Albini out on his first day at RR, lending Iggy $40, going to see Gimme Danger on election night, how Jim Jarmusch’s film basically overlooked the last Stooges record The Weirdness, which Albini engineered, election night predictions, phones on and off in the movie theatre, no surprise, voter participation, echo chambers, the shock, feeling ill- and misinformed about class-based anger, how Trump did everything he possibly could to willfully lose this election, people steeling themselves for the next four years, people who protest, The Dark Knight Rises, the left and exclusion and intersectionality, Michael Moore’s Facebook Live report during a recent protest in New York City, rationale, the ‘this will be good for comedy/punk rock’ stupidity, hoping for empathy, talking about Fake Limbs and their album Matronly, Black Lives Matter and “An Inconvenience,” Trump’s cabinet, what is punk, dinner with Grace Ambrose, Phleg Camp, the Jesus Lizard, Carla Bozulich, influence projection, idiots, Don Giovanni Records, Moor Mother’s Fetish Bones, more hugs, Bandcamp and Jes Skolnik, the Fugazi Live Archive, the song “Lil Bit,” and that was all from Fresca.

Ep. #276: Katie Monks of Dilly Dally

Katie Monks and Liz Ball are members of an explosive Toronto-based rock band called Dilly Dally. High school friends, Monks and Ball grew up loving Nirvana, Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs among others, eventually honing their own chops as guitarists and songwriters and forming Dilly Dally. In the fall of 2015, the band released its critically-acclaimed album Sore, via the Toronto label Buzz Records, and have been touring steadily ever since with forthcoming dates at Arboretum Festival in Ottawa on August 17 and many European and American shows, beginning at the end of August and leading into September and October . Here, Katie and I discuss the fact that Liz is probably sleeping, setting the record straight about info in the ‘official’ Dilly Dally bio, things from the past get soupy, why her and friends gravitated towards sad, junkie, self-destructive artist boys like Kurt Cobain, Christopher Owens, and Pete Doherty, kill yr idols, maternal instincts, getting it together, bowing down to nobody and respecting life, compassion, owing your fans, Toronto hype, the mythology around tortured artists and success, the music industry, Kurt Cobain was likely smart, a switch, being a woman and helping other women, growing up in Newmarket, living the dream, seeking chaos, the Toronto real estate-related arts exodus, 2013 Toronto, construction in the city, Drake, Rob Ford, Fucked Up, the Blue Jays, and the Raptors and Toronto getting more worldwide attention, the Dilly Dally song “Purple Rage” and the Prince song “Purple Rain,” loving problematic Prince and Purple Rain, her brother Dave who plays in Tokyo Police Club and what their musical upbringing was like, a Beatles chord book, older sibling shop talk, safe European flights, a Dublin family reunion, touring the U.S. during the actual presidential election this fall, the unmediated truth, the future of Dilly Dally and the song “The Touch,” a postcard of a dead cat, and that was that.

Ep. #243: Toronto Blue Jays Panel with Stacey May Fowles, Desmond Cole, Drew Fairservice, & Josh Zucker

This episode was recorded at the Great Hall in Toronto, as part of the Long Winter festival on Friday March 18, 2016. I moderated a panel about the Toronto Blue Jays featuring experts such as Baseball Life Advice writer Stacey May Fowles, Toronto Star columnist and Newstalk 1010 host Desmond Cole, Birds All Day podcast host Drew Fairservice, and Long Winter co-founder and Fucked Up guitarist Josh Zucker. By all accounts this was an insightful, fun, and accessible conversation about the Jays, spring training, the giant Ted Rogers statue and the police and online threats, Jose Bautista and the batflip and Goose Gossage, decorum, star veteran contracts, Alex Anthopolous and Ross Atkins, how the Jays impact the city of Toronto, losers, Josh Donaldson a.k.a. Our Charming Dirtbag Boyfriend, Toronto’s tiered sports hierarchy, the Leafs and Raptors, Rob Ford’s Toronto, a gay pride night, the 2016 roster and season, the Kansas City Royals, Edwin Encarnación, a lightning round, and that’s the ball game.

Mixed by Amit Kalisher. Recorded by Dave MacKinnon. Photo by Colin Medley. Produced by Long Winter, Vish Khanna, and Joel Garcia.
