Ep. #258: Shotgun Jimmie

Shotgun Jimmie is a prolific and talented singer, songwriter, and musician who currently lives in Brandon, Manitoba. Over the past 10 years, Shotgun Jimmie has emerged as one of the most beloved figures in indie-rock and has been touring a bunch in support of his latest record, Field of Trampolines, which is out now via You’ve Changed Records. He’s crossing Canada and Europe over the next few months, including a May 28 Toronto show at the Monarch Tavern and a June 3 Guelph show at the Ebar over the next while. Jimmie and I caught up on the last day of the Lawnya Vawnya festival in St. John’s, Newfoundland a few weeks ago (in a windy spot by the harbour) where we discussed taking photos of me in St. John’s, enjoying Lawnya Vawnya, loving the Ship and its smell, embarrassing stage banter, the one-man band version of Shotgun Jimmie, novelty act concerns, name changes, Steven Lambke, Michael Feuerstack, Bill Callahan, big pun, his unexpected relationship with stand-up comedy, Yuk Yuk’s, Shaun Majumder on the come-up, visible minorities in Newfoundland, some of this traffic-stopping for pedestrians might not be safe, growing up a creative prankster in Ajax, Oshawa and the Baird Brothers, living in Toronto and then Sackville and the band Drummer, Frederick Squire, Shotgun & Jaybird, calling Shotgun, Paul Henderson and Julie Doiron, Eric’s Trip and Moonsocket, Stephen Malkmus and boosting, socializing with heroes, camaraderie, the wind and Signal Hill, how we dress almost exactly the same right down to the brand name and specific clothing item, the end of Shotgun & Jaybird, two rounds of f&c at the Duke of Duckworth, when he became Shotgun Jimmie, the song “Bedhead,” celebrity impressions, Kermit and Yoda, sleeping bags and stagecraft, a beach ball globe, love songs about Eric’s Trip, Constantines, Attack in Black, and Project 9, dorky namechecks, “Unseen Power of the Picket Fence,” Malkmus and calling rock bands out by name, meta cultural commentary, Steve Earle, befriending Steven Lambke and Daniel Romano and repping You’ve Changed Records, YC Video and new releases, Nap Eyes and Partner, optimism and sincerity in the face of hipster indifference, no back-up, studying fine art, no one emails anymore because they text, an artist’s residency in Sackville via Sappyfest, playing Sled Island again, maybe playing Sappyfest, stand-up comedy confidence, prepared banter, the song “Field of Trampolines,” and then the wind picked up.

Ep. #193: Angel Olsen

Angel Olsen is an evocative and true singer and songwriter who originally hails from Missouri but now calls North Carolina home. A frequent collaborator of Bonnie “Prince” Billy, as well as the Cairo Gang, Olsen emerged as a solo force with her 2010 debut EP, Strange Cacti and its 2012 full-length follow-up, Half Way Home. Her most recent album is Burn Your Fire for No Witness, which was widely hailed as a masterpiece and the best album of 2014 according to the A.V. Club. The record is available via Jagjaguwar and Olsen is playing select solo shows in Canada, including a NXNE appearance on June 20 in Toronto and Sappyfest in Sackville, New Brunswick on August 1. Here, Angel and I talk about how it’s funny to be called the best, lists and friendships, the year 2014, Dude Incredible by Shellac of North America, forming a band and playing solo, how band arrangements might impact deeply personal creations, working with Will Oldham and the Cairo Gang and leadership, other people’s annoying suggestions, what Burn Your Fire for No Witness might say about Angel’s 26th year, people’s fixation on darkness in her work even though there’s lightness in there, people should be able to sense her sense of humour, comedy jokes, two nuns and an orgasm, funny and mystifying lyrics, where the songs might come from, external perceptions and disappointing media coverage, podcasts are preferable, e-mail interviews too, nosy journalists, early music days for Angel, makeshift audio engineering, Skeeter Davis and the Davis Sisters, busking in St. Louis, early days working with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Emmett Kelly, people might be popping off too soon, getting into film and filmmaking maybe, writing a book, the movie Paper Moon, the next album is shaping up in some ways, recording everyday, conversations at parties that are presumably about LeBron James, a possible Angel Olsen covers album, working on piano pieces for something, the use value in learning another person’s song, the Everly Brothers and singing like you talk, the song “Iota,” insecurity, and this was fun.

Ep. #119: Constantines

Constantines are a powerful and influential band who originally formed in Guelph, Ontario in 1999. After releasing four acclaimed and inspiring post-punk/rock ‘n’ roll albums, Constantines went on indefinite hiatus in 2010. The band have reconvened in recent months and Sub Pop reissued their classic 2003 album Shine a Light this past June. Constantines are playing a number of shows over the coming months, including stops in Sackville, NB (SappyFest, Aug. 3), Peterborough, ON (Peterborough Folk Festival, Aug. 22), Ottawa, ON (Arboretum Festival, Aug. 23), Toronto, ON (The Molson Canadian Amphitheatre w/ Arcade Fire, Aug. 29), Toronto, ON (The Danforth Music Hall, Oct. 2), Montreal, QC (Club Soda, Oct. 4), Vancouver, BC (Commodore Ballroom, Oct. 8),  Calgary, AB (Commonwealth Bar & Stage, Oct. 9), and Edmonton, AB (UPDT Festival, Oct. 11).
