Ep. #80: Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco is a Brooklyn-based musician, songwriter, and multimedia artist who is quite popular among people who enjoy cool songs that sound awesome. Originally from Duncan, British Columbia, DeMarco also spent time in Edmonton and used to present his work under the name Makeout Videotape. He began using his own name with the 2012 EP Rock and Roll Nightclub and later that same year, the acclaimed album 2. On April 1, Captured Tracks will release his excellent new record Salad Days and he will tour the world extensively, including Canadian stops in Wakefield, Sherbrooke, and Montreal in April and also NXNE in Toronto in June. Here, Mac and I discuss loving Brooklyn and not loving Montreal, the TV shows Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Girls, Minor Threat, Shakespeare, and the expression ‘salad days,’ how his jaded perspective was measured by reflection on his new songs, how touring can be a springboard into adulthood, how Mac’s songs are primarily about him and his own life and that he’s on something of an “insane egomaniac ride,” his upbringing in Edmonton and how the local scene there inspired him to start playing music, his love of the Beatles, the Gories, and Beat Happening, how John Lennon and Harry Nilsson shine through in his work and why young people dig it, his future recording plans and a unique Record Store Day treat, his collaboration with Tyler, the Creator, a guy named Chas, his live band, the song “Chamber of Reflection,” and more.

Ep. #51: Tim Heidecker

Tim Heidecker is a talented musician and singer who is one-half of the rock and roll songwriting duo Heidecker and Wood. Along with Davin Wood, Heidecker released a record called Starting From Nowhere in 2011 after the pair had established a rapport working together on the TV program, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and also the film, Tim and Eric Billion Dollar Movie. Now they’re back with their sophomore record, a decidedly decadent affair called Some Things Never Stay the Same, which is out Nov. 12 via Little Record Company. Here, Tim and I discuss the sun, Heidecker and Wood and his earliest musical influences, the 1970s, sincerity, spirituality, air travel, cocaine, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, how comedy and music intersect, a new Adult Swim series called Tim and Eric’s Bedtime Stories, the song “Getaway Man” and much more.

Ep. #41: Mike O’Neill

Mike O’Neill is a very talented singer, songwriter, and musician who currently lives in Halifax, NS. He first came to prominence in the esteemed two-piece indie-rock band the Inbreds and has gone on to make some really remarkable solo albums, including 2012’s criminally underrated Wild Lines. He’s also a screenwriter and has worked extensively on the very popular TV and film versions of the Trailer Park Boys series. O’Neill recently began collaborating with an enigmatic American-based Canadian songwriter named Devon Sproule and, on Sept. 24, the duo released a thoughtful, gorgeous collaborative album called Colours via Tin Angel Records. A couple of months ago, I met up with Mike at his mom’s house in Oshawa and got some background about his life there. I met his mom who offered her insights, I learned about Mike’s foray into student council politics and how his late, handy dad helped him make his first drum kit, I got some more info about Mike’s visual arts background and how his attempt to impress a prom date with a mural sort of backfired, his early musical obsessions, how the Inbreds started, his work with Devon Sproule and her impact on his process, what’s up with the new Trailer Park Boys movie, and just a ton more. There’s some songs on here too. Hedges get clipped. It’s a good episode. Mike rules.
