Ep. #108: Born Ruffians

Born Ruffians are a terrifically sharp indie-rock band whose latest album is called Birthmarks. Released in 2013 via Paper Bag Records, it’s the band’s third record and found them exploring more polished pop production. On Sunday July 27, Born Ruffians are playing the penultimate Main Stage set at the 2014 Hillside Festival so I tracked down singer, guitarist, and songwriter Luke Lalonde and bassist Mitch DeRosier at Ronnie’s Local in Kensington Market where they drank and we chatted about the visceral reaction people might have when they see Constantines and/or the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat play again, hanging out together in Elora at Riverfest last summer, Shirley Temple, Ashley MacIsaac, my unwanted festival advances, how Born Ruffians set the table for Serena Ryder, if the band has hang-ups about its status in this country, Cam Lindsay does his research, Luke does an impressive array of improvised impressions, the Canadian music industry, being nominated for the ‘Breakthrough Group of the Year’ at the Junos after being around for 12 years, always being a new band to someone, drinking with your tiny baby at Ronnie’s Local, Luke and Mitch are second cousins, I own a Beatles t-shirt older than people in Born Ruffians, family ties, the weird, lawsuit-baiting restaurant that Mitch’s family owned in Midland, Luke forced Mitch to play bass after travelling through time, Steve Hamelin got inspired to buy a drum kit, musical dads, Mitch reads other people’s sad texts, getting into music on your own, the Minutemen and the Unicorns, discovering bands and punk aggression, the bold pop moves of Birthmarks, the weirdness around making Say It, losing Steve the drummer at least twice, Luke and Mitch have been drinking, Steve will play on the new record but other drummers might too, there are 150 songs written towards the new Born Ruffians song, no, there are zero new songs written, Born Ruffians killed a guy, Mac DeMarco’s friend Chas interrupts this interview, there’s a secret Makeout Videotape show happening during NXNE either on the Saturday or the Sunday, I offended Chas, the dove-eating story could’ve been way better, Hillside hat-trick, the song “Oh Cecilia,” dove’s D, and scene.

Ep. #80: Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco is a Brooklyn-based musician, songwriter, and multimedia artist who is quite popular among people who enjoy cool songs that sound awesome. Originally from Duncan, British Columbia, DeMarco also spent time in Edmonton and used to present his work under the name Makeout Videotape. He began using his own name with the 2012 EP Rock and Roll Nightclub and later that same year, the acclaimed album 2. On April 1, Captured Tracks will release his excellent new record Salad Days and he will tour the world extensively, including Canadian stops in Wakefield, Sherbrooke, and Montreal in April and also NXNE in Toronto in June. Here, Mac and I discuss loving Brooklyn and not loving Montreal, the TV shows Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Girls, Minor Threat, Shakespeare, and the expression ‘salad days,’ how his jaded perspective was measured by reflection on his new songs, how touring can be a springboard into adulthood, how Mac’s songs are primarily about him and his own life and that he’s on something of an “insane egomaniac ride,” his upbringing in Edmonton and how the local scene there inspired him to start playing music, his love of the Beatles, the Gories, and Beat Happening, how John Lennon and Harry Nilsson shine through in his work and why young people dig it, his future recording plans and a unique Record Store Day treat, his collaboration with Tyler, the Creator, a guy named Chas, his live band, the song “Chamber of Reflection,” and more.

Mac DeMarco on Tyler the Creator collab, coke mirrors

Mac DeMarco Cigarette Heaven

During an interview for an upcoming episode of Kreative Kontrol, Mac DeMarco discussed plans to make more records beyond his upcoming LP Salad Days (out April 1 via Captured Tracks), release a specialty line of mirrors, and what his recent photo with Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator was all about.

“This last year was crazy and I really wanted to get another album out sooner than this after 2,” DeMarco said, when asked about any special releases he might have up his sleeve for Record Store Day. “I think I’m going to do more EPs, do more recordings, hopefully make the tour schedule [less] crazy. As far as treats for Record Store Day, I’m not sure if we have anything in direct correlation for it but we do have all kinds of strange crap coming out with this album, so it should be kind of fun.”

When pressed to elaborate about this “strange crap,” DeMarco giddily revealed a possible idea.

“I’ll give you one treat. I’m not sure if this is going to happen—we’re trying pretty hard, me and the label—but you know those 70s style printed mirrors with the fancy frames? Like for the Grateful Dead—we’re trying to hook something like that up. Mac DeMarco coke mirrors; God bless it.”

DeMarco also explained what was up between him and Tyler, the Creator after a photo of the pair in front of a green screen circulated with minimal explanation.

“It was a very brief collaboration, not really anything that will show up on any kind of album or anything,” he said. “A little bit of movie shooting—the guy does have a TV show after all. It’s just going to be a short thing but probably extremely offensive so we’ll see how that turns out.”

Apparently DeMarco connected with the Odd Future figurehead when a mutual friend who goes by “Chas” and lives in Toronto asked Tyler to check out DeMarco’s music.

“He’s like my number one fan or whatever,” DeMarco explained. “Chas actually has a Mac tattoo now; I gave him a tattoo of my name. Any way, he showed Tyler my stuff at some point and then Tyler started tweeting at me. The people who do my press also do Odd Future’s press and when I was in L.A., they were like, ‘Tyler wants to meet up,’ and I was like, ‘Ok, sure.’ I’d already sent him pictures of my naked penis and stuff so I figured that meeting in the flesh was right around the corner.”
