Ep. #159: Carl Newman of the New Pornographers

Carl Newman is a well-respected and gifted pop songwriter who originally hails from Vancouver, British Columbia. Over the past 20 years, he has spearheaded bands like Superconductor and Zumpano, and released highly acclaimed solo records under the name A.C. Newman. While long-respected by peers and critics for his sense of melody and powerful hooks, Newman’s work reached a wider audience at the turn of the century with the emergence of the New Pornographers, a gang of singers and songwriters featuring Neko Case, Destroyer’s Dan Bejar, and Newman among others. Each of the band’s six albums has been called a classic by someone who could spot such things, including their latest LP, 2014’s Brill Bruisers, which, as their highest charting album to date, is their most impactful release since their 2000 debut, Mass Romantic. The New Pornographers are touring behind Brill Bruisers, including stops at London’s Music Hall on Feb. 6 and Guelph’s Hillside Inside festival on Feb. 7. Here, Carl and I talk about when your family gets sick, the measles and Disneyland and the anti-vaccination movement, freedom, science versus pseudoscience, happiness after sadness, preparing for and then having a kid, defining rock and ‘power-pop,’ Big Star and Cheap Trick, staying in the game versus retirement, false cheer, the Neko Case harmony lead on “Champions of Red Wine,” what Dan Bejar’s talking about and how he deals, talking about each other’s songs, being normal and wanting to do nothing, connecting with comedians, the older brother with the music, becoming a performer, working with Sloan and murderecords, how Vancouver music was treated by the rest of Canada 20 years ago, the rapid ascent of the New Pornographers, the future, the song “Hi-Rise,” and then I got my marching orders.

Ep. #46: Al Tuck

Al Tuck hails from Charlottetown on beautiful Prince Edward Island in Canada. Over the past 20 years, Tuck has established himself as one of the world’s great songwriters and musicians, quietly releasing one stellar album after the next and earning the respect and admiration of any lyricist and guitarist who hears him. His latest album is Stranger at the Wake and was released by Cameron House Records earlier this year. It was longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and earned critical accolades elsewhere and brings Tuck to the Halifax Pop Explosion this week. In September, Tuck joined me in-studio at CFRU for a good chat about Guelph, his status as a “cult figure,” his upbringing and early musical influences, his time in Halifax when its music scene was discovered by the international press, his songwriting, his voiceover work in films, his recent prolific streak of albums, the song “That Married Life” and much more.

Ep. #41: Mike O’Neill

Mike O’Neill is a very talented singer, songwriter, and musician who currently lives in Halifax, NS. He first came to prominence in the esteemed two-piece indie-rock band the Inbreds and has gone on to make some really remarkable solo albums, including 2012’s criminally underrated Wild Lines. He’s also a screenwriter and has worked extensively on the very popular TV and film versions of the Trailer Park Boys series. O’Neill recently began collaborating with an enigmatic American-based Canadian songwriter named Devon Sproule and, on Sept. 24, the duo released a thoughtful, gorgeous collaborative album called Colours via Tin Angel Records. A couple of months ago, I met up with Mike at his mom’s house in Oshawa and got some background about his life there. I met his mom who offered her insights, I learned about Mike’s foray into student council politics and how his late, handy dad helped him make his first drum kit, I got some more info about Mike’s visual arts background and how his attempt to impress a prom date with a mural sort of backfired, his early musical obsessions, how the Inbreds started, his work with Devon Sproule and her impact on his process, what’s up with the new Trailer Park Boys movie, and just a ton more. There’s some songs on here too. Hedges get clipped. It’s a good episode. Mike rules.
