LIDS is a Toronto-based trio consisting of Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, Dusted), Doug MacGregor (Constantines, City and Colour), and Alex Edkins (METZ). This past March, the band released a single for “Sarsfest” b/w “Blank Flag” via Telephone Explosion and have played select shows when their busy schedules permitted them to do so. This Sunday July 26 at 7 PM, LIDS performs at Guelph’s Hillside Festival and here, Brian, Doug, Alex, and I talk about the nineties, Empire Records and Reality Bites and The Ben Stiller Show, DVDs, Ronnie’s and break-ups, METZ are fine, where LIDS came from and how they’re a ‘stupor group,’ Rob Ford and the Pan Am Games HOV lanes, two and not three, Toronto the extreme, dysfunctional local government versus civic action, Mayor John Tory and Kanye West and Drake, slapping the bass, good and bad Hillside workshops, Brian dressed like a goofy robot, under pressure, when Prime Minister Stephen Harper attacked Holy Fuck, Doug’s jam band app, Dioctave and drumming with a drum machine, dabbled in clickage, LIDS is a buddy band, Chris Koltay from Detroit, one day in Perth, who’s the busiest, Doug has to juggle City and Colour and Constantines, Brian has free time, Dusted, the MC5 and Can, SARSstock, AC/DC kicked ass and the Stones kinda stunk, Will Kidman quit when AC/DC went on-stage, AC/DC rehearsed at Cherry Beach, my kid and AC/DC, Doug and Back in Black, when Brian defaced a Bon Scott statue, future plans for everyone, Holy Fuck’s new album, Hillside Festival chatter, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, the songs “Sarsfest” and “Blank Flag,” and then we put a lid on it.

Ep. #184: METZ

METZ is one of the best hard rock bands in the whole wide world and their members, singer/guitarist Alex Edkins, bassist/singer Chris Slorach, and drummer Hayden Menzies all currently reside in Toronto. Their new album is called II and is out now via Sub Pop, prompting them to tour the world over for the foreseeable future. On May 1, METZ and I hung out on a patio on Bloor Street and discussed being a at Strombo’s house, people’s perceptions of the band after they broke out, Jello Biafra and Johnny Rotten, the Shirley Temple I ordered, alcohol abstinence and straight edge, epically PG and PC punk culture, the song from Aladdin and a whole new world, academic punks, feeling too cool for Nirvana as a kid, the amazing band Hoover, people who care about a band playing lots of shows, living the dream, thinking about the future, aging into the music you make, knowing your limits, meticulous production, Cam Loeppky, recording new songs already, chatty Cathy, Highway to Hell, AC/DC, Clickbait Khanna, pancake Tuesday, favourite songs and not always knowing what Alex is writing about, bringing the vocals up, agonizing over lyrics, the song “Spit You Out,” and then we broke up.

Ep. #153: Jasmyn Burke of Weaves

Jasmyn Burke is the lead singer and co-founder of a great young band from Toronto called Weaves. If electronic, synthesizer-driven bands might be called computer music, Weaves make Internet rock—an open-minded, all-encompassing pop music that’s infused with all of the sounds and information that is currently available. They have received accolades from Canadian and U.S. media outlets and released their first EP this past April 1. On December 12, Weaves are playing Stay Out of the Mall XIII with METZ and Badminton Racquet at the Ebar in Guelph and here, Jasmyn and I discuss hanging out at her parents’ house in Ancaster Ontario, actually being raised in Toronto, making music the way you listen to music, being difficult to pigeonhole artistically, working with Morgan Waters who’s the Rosetta Stone of musical collaborators and translates her ideas into more of a pop framework, Dr. Ew, when bands like Alvvays and Weaves do well, playing in Rattail, Jasmyn’s nerves and overcoming performance anxiety rituals, introverts who become front people, no one’s going to die, growing up in Weston, the boring ‘burbs, a penny-farthing tattoo, suburban hunger, seeing someone play a Neil Young song and loving Bob Dylan, Hot Monogamy, having a passion for creating strong vocal melodies and lyrics, discovering your own voice, always loving Toronto and believing in its supportive underground music community, Drake, the city of Toronto’s notoriety of late, we do need another hero, insidious search history ads, Toronto pet peeves, avoiding condescending ghettoization, sometimes the less we talk about a problem, the more quickly it goes away, feeding off the tension about the differences between us, why Weaves release singles every few months rather than a full LP, batch versus incremental recording, writing and recording all of the time, the album will be dead, the Weaves album will be deadly, opening for tUnE-yArDs at Massey Hall, Merrill Garbus is super nice, not working much, not complaining, travel and recording plans, seeing Bob Dylan live, the song “Shithole,” finding alien song ideas in your iPhone Voice Memos, and that’s it.
