Ep. #157: Long Night with Me, Aisha Alfa, Freddie Rivas, Anne Kingston, and the Weather Station

As some of you know I host a live talk show called Long Night with Vish Khanna every month (between November and March) at the Great Hall, as part of Long Winter in Toronto. The most recent episode on January 9, 2015 was actually recorded and so I’m presenting most of it to you here. You’ll hear the talk show band stylings of the Bicycles, the talk show sidekick stylings of James Keast, a stand-up set by Toronto comedian Aisha Alfa, a brief appearance by funny person and puppeteer Freddie Rivas, a serious interview about Jian Ghomeshi with Macleans Senior Writer Anne Kingston, and two songs by the Weather Station, as performed by the Weather Station. The final two regularly scheduled episodes of the year take place on February 13 and March 13 so please come see them at the Great Hall.

Ep. #155: The Weather Station

Tamara Lindeman is a captivating singer and vivid lyricist who operates under the moniker the Weather Station. Currently based in Toronto, Lindeman has been a member of notable bands like Entire Cities, Bruce Peninsula, and Marine Dreams and she has collaborated with Baby Eagle, Bahamas, Doug Paisley, Siskiyou, and more. She recently released a beautiful observational EP called What Am I Going to Do with Everything I Know, which is out now on the fine North American label, You’ve Changed Records, and precedes the spring release of her next full-length album, Loyalty. The Weather Station are playing a song or two on my Long Night talk show at Long Winter at the Great Hall in Toronto on Friday January 9 at around 8:00 PM and here we discuss relationship tension, narrative and personal songwriting, Steven Lambke’s ingenious songwriting as Baby Eagle, working with Daniel Romano who’s a doer, growing up outside of Orangeville, not really listening to good music until moving to Toronto, cultural isolation, learning to play and write late in life, a secret life as a thespian, Tilda Swinton, The Murdoch Mysteries, AC/DC and High Voltage, hints about the new album Loyalty, the song “What Am I Going to Do (With Everything I Know),” and much more than I had the time to write about this morning.

Ep. #146: Lee Paradise

Lee Paradise is the stage name of an endlessly creative young man from Toronto named Daniel Lee. Over the past few years he’s been a key figure in unique bands like Hooded Fang and Phèdre and he co-founded the Daps Records label. This past April, Pleasence Records and not unlike released the excellent Lee Paradise album Water Palace Kingdom and he’s been keeping busy ever since. On Friday November 14, Lee Paradise performs at Long Winter at the Great Hall in Toronto and, to mark the occasion, Daniel and I talked about two record labels, one record, why Lee Paradise was necessary, getting personal, going down to the basement to make a new Hooded Fang record, stress and on-stage meltdowns in Montreal, amoureux, pissing in a sink, love can be crude, tears and water and emo, making clean music dirty, making interesting music reggae, reacting to and reflecting Toronto, competitive juices, a normal crazy family life, not loving music school, rapping as Able D, Beastie Boys and Wu-Tang Clan, seeing shows at the Music Gallery as a kid, battles of the bands at the Opera House, high-speed electronic music, the Harris Institute is not like DeVry, why Daps Records came to be, making a living as an artist these days, selling out and making ethical decisions, sludginess, surf rock and Joe Meek, Hooded Fang’s musical journey, control versus collaboration, limitations are good, Hooded Fang tour dates including a Nov. 29 show at the Silver Dollar in Toronto, Moss Lime, Fixture Records, Milk Lines, Daps Records is still a thing, the song “Farisian,” and then it’s paradise lost.
