Ep. #79: Nick Sewell of Biblical

Nick Sewell sings and plays bass in a mighty rock band from Toronto called Biblical. Formed in 2010, Biblical features members of the Illuminati, the Bicycles, and the Old Soul and are hailed for their heavy, swirling take on psych rock. The band’s blistering new album is Monsoon Season, which is out now via New Damage Records, and it’s prompted them to tour, including a stop in Guelph during Kazoo! Fest between April 9 and 13. Here, Nick and I discuss his dad John Sewell who was Mayor of Toronto between 1978-1980 and has some thoughts about Rob Ford and the current state of municipal affairs, Nick’s own political aspirations or lack thereof, whether or not Biblical is a metal band and how Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet might be a subtle influence, other possible misconceptions about the band based around ‘psych’ or ‘stoner rock’ tags, the emotional complexity of Monsoon Season, being small in a huge space, travelling, fleeing, and restlessness, Biblical’s new songs and upcoming plans, the song “All Justice No Peace,” and more.

Ep. #78: John Carter Cash

John Carter Cash is an accomplished American record producer, novelist, children’s author, and musician. He is the only child of the late, legendary couple June Carter and Johnny Cash, whom he often worked with both in the studio and out on the road, and he recently discovered a treasure trove of unreleased, neglected music recorded by his parents. On March 25, Columbia Records’ Legacy imprint will release one of these finds, a stirring and strong Johnny Cash album recorded by Billy Sherrill at sessions in 1981 and 1984. The record is called Out Among the Stars and here, Cash and I discuss the 1996 concert I saw him play with his parents at Massey Hall, how he discovered these recordings and a whole bunch more inside of his parents’ vault, how Columbia messed up their relationship with Johnny Cash in the 1980s, Marty Stuart’s role on this record, his dad’s struggles and positive time spent at the Betty Ford Center for addiction in the early ’80s, some key songs and performances here, what’s left in the Johnny Cash recording archives, his work with the estate of Roy Orbison and forthcoming projects by Loretta Lynn, the song “She Used to Love Me A Lot,” and more.

Ep. #77: Maica Mia

Maica Mia is a three-piece band from Montreal featuring Maica Armata, Jonny Paradise, and, most recently, bassist, Mauro Pezzente who is also a member of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Together they create a compelling, emotionally rich kind of contemporary folk music bolstered by heavy instrumentation and electronic flourishes that propel Armata’s evocative and powerful vocals.  This past January Maica Mia self-released their gorgeous second album; it’s called Des Era and has prompted them to tour, including a stop at the Drake in Toronto on Friday March 7, shows at SXSW on March 13 and 14, Quebec City on March 28, and Montreal on April 4. Here, Maica and I discuss face-touching danger, the beauty and joy of physical mail, the sound of Maica Mia and what cinematic music means, Maica’s favourite movie and her love of “animals” and phoning home,  I AM NOT AN ANIMAL, music and things that inspire Maica to make the unsettling music she makes, why a movie she hasn’t seen yet is probably her favourite movie, particular themes on the record that have become evident to Maica, Dimitri Nasrallah, how Mauro Pezzente ended up in Maica Mia, the next album, the song “wish,” and more.
