LES MAMMOGRAPHES

Clues

Clues was founded by Alden Penner and Brendan Reed, both active for years in the Montreal music scene. Alden was one-half of Unicorns, a band that burned bright and fast at the beginning of the century, and Brendan has been a member of a number of groups, including the endless, Endless Forever. They began building Clues quietly and in near-secrecy during the summer of 2007, playing a series of unadvertised shows in small Montreal venues. Their early performances elicited passionate responses and made it clear that Alden had an awesome batch of new tunes in the works, a glorious voice to deliver them with, and a brilliant foil in Brendan as his co-conspirator.
By 2008, friends Ben Borden, Lisa Gamble, and Nick Scribner had been recruited from the Montreal art and music scenes; a few more exuberant shows went down, the sound building and strengthening every time. With the band’s foundations fully cemented, Clues began work on a debut record towards the end of the year.
During live shows and on recordings, the band share and trade-off on an extensive array of instruments and create a twitchy, urgent, utterly original music that expands Montreal’s (already diverse) pop music lexicon. Clues incorporates multiple drummers, horns, a table of fried electronics (including a Commodore 64 and an OLPC), saw and pianette alongside their trusty electric guitars and basses.
Through their founding and early work as a band, Clues has remained close to home, dedicated to collaborating with and supporting fellow independent artists. In 2008, Reed started VillaVillaNola, a digital music store featuring recordings by predominantly local artists who have flourished underground but who otherwise receive sparse attention. Strong ties to the independent music community, together with shared ideals, led Clues to collaborate with Montreal’s Constellation, who released the band’s debut record in May of 2009.

Etaoin Shrdlu

Featuring members of Rockets Red Glare, Weights and Measures, and I Can Put My Arm Back On You Can’t, the personnel list in Etaoin Shrdlu (there is no proper pronunciation) reads as an all-star lineup for the Southern Ontario post-hardcore scene. In the same way that their name is taken from a forgotten reference within the printing industry, the band was originally conceived as a side project to explore a style of instrumental music that was felt to be lost or abandoned by contemporary bands. The result is a series of songs that are precisely executed and riddled with tension, while still being heavy, groove oriented, and surprisingly catchy. Their new, debut album Mating Calls is one of the biggest sounding albums of the year!

SHAD

I AM ROBOT AND PROUD

Shad

Shad (Shadrach Kabango) has emphatically emerged as one of Canada’s most gifted young hip-hop artists. After garnering groundbreaking reviews on his independent 2005 debut When This is Over, Shad seems to have effortlessly leaped over huge expectations with his 2007 sophomore release, The Old Prince. Shad stepped into the Canadian music scene, winning first prize at 91.5 FM’s (London, ON) annual Rhythm of the Future unsigned talent competition. Shad put the $17,500 prize towards recording resources for his debut, while completing an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Wilfrid Laurier University. When This is Over earned endless respect for its honest and clever lyrics and its distinct musical aesthetic. Shad toured the album, selling out solo shows in Toronto and London, playing for campuses across the country, and landing opening spots for the likes of Common, Lupe Fiasco, Classified and The Slip. His constantly developing fan base and reputation as a performing musician also landed Shad invaluable stage-time at a variety of festivals including Hillside, the PTBO Folk Festival, Wakestock and Manifesto. Shad’s growth as a musician shines through on The Old Prince. Smashing expectations, Shad has attained lightning reviews across the board, including a spot in Exclaim’s Top 10 Hip Hop Albums of the Year, 5 N’s in Now Magazine, an epic album review on the internationally read and extremely critical hip-hop site, Okayplayer.com, and a 2008 Juno Nomination for Rap Recording of the Year. With two instant classics under his belt, Shad continues to walk the humble path he always has. He appreciates the chance to make and share his music, and he feels really lucky to have his art received the way it is. For Shad, it’s really as simple as that.

I Am Robot and Proud

I Am Robot and Proud (Shaw-Han Liem) is a one-man indie electronic artist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has toured with bands such as Constantines, Printed Circuit, Marumari, Ariel Pink, and The Unicorns. Shaw-Han has also been a member of Sea Snakes, Jim Guthrie Band, Nathan Lawr and the Minotaurs and Tusks. Currently he is collaborating with game designer Jonathan Mak on an upcoming videogame, for which he will serve as music composer and sound designer. He participated in a roundtable discussion on the topic of independent video game music at the 2009 Game Developers Conference together with the composers of independent game titles PixelJunk Eden, Flower and Night Game. His latest album is called Uphill City and it’s awesome.

KYEO 010! GENTLEMAN REG! COPILOTS! CHARLESS! 10/08/2009

KYEO & The CSA Present:

Thursday October 8, 2009

Gentleman Reg (Toronto)
+
Copilots (Vancouver)

Gentleman Reg

Gentleman Reg has been performing in Canada since the turn of the millennium, garnering attention for his two acclaimed full-lengths, 2002’s Make Me Pretty and 2004’s Darby & Joan. With a voice from the heavens and an unforgettable look, Gentleman Reg made his U.S. debut earlier this year on Arts & Crafts with the release of the critically acclaimed Jet Black. Gentleman Reg has made fans of some of Canada’s best talent, performing and touring with such acts as Tegan and Sara, Broken Social Scene, Stars and The Hidden Cameras. In the U.S., Gentleman Reg is best known for being featured in the 2006 John Cameron Mitchell movie, Short Bus, in which he made a brief cameo and contributed to the films soundtrack. Reg used to live in Guelph and he’s coming back to show off just a little bit.

Copilots

On Escape Through The Trees, their first CD on Drip Audio, Copilots have captured a sound that is familiar, unique, eclectic and cohesive, tapping deep into elements of pop, psychedelic, punk, and classic rock. Escape Through The Trees documents the group moving forward into new sonic territory from its original release, further exploring the talents of the band members’ gifted songwriting and musicianship. Copilots are a five-piece rock band from Vancouver, BC. Formed in 2005, their debut self-titled (2007) CD received glowing reviews across Canada. The band is Skye Brooks – guitar/vocals (Inhabitants, Fond of Tigers, Veda Hille, Ndidi Onukwulu), Pete Schmitt – bass/vocals (Inhabitants, Josh Martinez), Chad MacQuarrie – guitar/vocals (DarkBlueWorld, NOW Orchestra, Carol Pope), Karma Sohn – keys/vocals & Dylan Smith – drums. These musicians’ backgrounds are equally rooted in creative/improvised music, as well as the many facets of rock and roll. Their adventurous spirit reveals itself in memorable melodies, propulsive and seamless odd time rhythms, and dream-like lyricism that explores the subconscious, human nature, and the power of wilderness. A restrained intensity simmers throughout their performances, at times boiling over into ecstatic abandon.
