Ep. #39: Anne T. Donahue on Breaking Bad

Anne T. Donahue is a comedic writer and journalist who hails from Cambridge, ON. She once interviewed me for a music blog and is a regular contributor to The Guardian and Yahoo! TV, and she’s very funny and observant on twitter. She invited me to have breakfast and, because I know she’s a huge Breaking Bad fan, I thought we should head down to the Town & Country Restaurant and Tavern in Guelph, document our meal and talk about last night’s series finale, why people might relate to Walter White in these shaky economic times, my recent stint co-hosting the Polaris Music Prize gala broadcast, the freelance life, comedy and music, and whether or not she and I are going to be ok.

Ep. #38: Krist Novoselic

Krist Novoselic is an American musician. filmmaker, author, columnist, and political advocate who has played in bands like Sweet 75, Eyes Adrift, Flipper, and, on occasion Foo Fighters. He is best known for playing bass in the Washington State-based rock trio, Nirvana, which he co-founded in the mid-1980s with the late singer/songwriter/guitarist Kurt Cobain. In the past few months, Novoselic has made the odd live appearance with fellow Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Pat Smear in a unique collaboration with Paul McCartney. Nirvana’s final album was an amazing one called In Utero, which came out in September 1993 and to honour its 20th anniversary, a special edition of the album with lots of cool additions is set to be released by Geffen on Sept. 24. So Krist and I spoke briefly about this.

Ep. #37: Doug Tielli

Doug Tielli is one of the most captivating and talented musicians in Toronto’s underground music community. His work is both innocent and searching yet completely deliberate and confident in its uncertainty. A multi-instrumentalist who has enriched records by Owen Pallett, the Luyas, Constantines, Sandro Perri and many more, Tielli has been a key figure in his own lovely, off-kilter bands like the Reveries, Drumheller, and the Silt. Tielli’s latest album is called Keresley, it’s out now via Tin Angel records, and brings him to Silence Guelph on Sept. 20, Toronto’s Tranzac on Sept. 26, and Waterloo’s Jane Bond on Sept. 29. Here Doug and I discuss his day job, lost passports and unintentional extended trips, songs vs. dreams, whether or not he might be odd, his Tielli brothers Martin and John, his upbringing, his family, coming out of premature retirement, his music and more.
