Ep. #55: Jace Lasek of the Besnard Lakes

Jace Lasek is the co-founder and primary instrumentalist in the mighty Montreal rock band, the Besnard Lakes. Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Lasek made his way to Montreal some time ago and now co-owns the state of the art Breakglass recording studio, where he serves as an engineer and producer. Among the many cool records made at Breakglass is the latest and fourth full-length by the Besnard Lakes, Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO, which was released earlier this year on Jagjaguwar and Outside Music. The band’s current tour brings them to Toronto’s Lee’s Palace on Nov. 29 and here Lasek and I discuss the band’s new album, its connection to Albuquerque, New Mexico, what it’s like to write and sing with his wife Olga Goreas, how drugs work and what they do, the song “Colour Yr Lights In” and more.

Ep. #54: Brendan Canning

Brendan Canning is a founding member of Broken Social Scene and has been a prominent and prolific figure in Canada’s underground music community for over two decades. Since Broken Social Scene went on their most recent hiatus, Canning has kept busy, resurrecting his old pop project Cookie Duster, scoring major Hollywood films like this year’s controversial The Canyons, DJing at the Drake, and, he recently began collaborating on a video game project with David Cronenberg. In October, Canning released You Gots 2 Chill, his second proper solo album on his own Draper Street Records and it’s prompted him to tour across Canada and the U.S. in November and December. Here Brendan and I discuss who has gots 2 chill, EPMD, Beastie Boys, Toronto and Ford Nation, recording mellow songs onto your own voicemail, scoring movies, video games, Lindsay Lohan, the song “However Long,” and more.

Ep. #53: Casey Mecija on #ProjectLiftPH + Jonathan Goldsbie on Mayor Rob Ford

Casey Mecija is a musician and artist originally from Brantford, Ontario but currently based in Toronto, where she gained renown as the lead vocalist in a band called Ohbijou. Mecija is also of Filipino descent and has been raising awareness about the devastation in the Philippines, wrought by typhoons Haiyan and Yolanda. On December 4, she and her sister Jenny, also of Ohibjou, are taking part in #ProjectLiftPH, a benefit concert at the Great Hall to raise funds for the stricken region.

Jonathan Goldsbie is a staff writer at NOW magazine in Toronto where he writes about politics, media, local news, and more. As the situation with Mayor Rob Ford and Toronto City Council becomes increasingly surreal and disturbing, Goldsbie’s twitter feed has been indispensable, as he provides biting, insightful coverage of virtually every aspect of “the Mayor” and his brother Doug have been up to.
