Tacoma Hellfarm Tragedy

The Tacoma Hellfarm Tragedy are based in Ontario’s royal city; Guelph. Their roots spread far and deep in to Canadian soil. These lovers and bandits have wandered in from the underbrush; dirty, slightly bruised but with clarity of mind and spirit to play songs. Songs of lost love, songs of rage and regret, songs of jubilant excitation. These songs tell stories. Stories about people. People who may or may not have ever really lived. These songs strike to the core of what folk music is. That is, if you took the live end of folk music and plugged it in to that transformer that hums outside your window in the middle of the night. But under the electric hum is an earthy tone. And if you pay close attention you can smell sweet gasoline and the sound of worn wheels on a dusty road. Chances are that’s the sound of the boys on their way to the next honky tonk. The band are pleased to release Canter Canter, the long-awaited follow-up to their acclaimed 2007 release, Orchard Songs.

Huron

Huron is a rock and roll band from Hamilton, Ontario. The four of us got together in early 2008 and released our self-titled full-length record, produced by Ian Blurton. Sometimes the music is big southern-fried Sabbath riffin’. Sometimes we just sing songs that come from a Neil Young, Beatles and the Band-type of place. Sometimes the Floyd and the Dead get the better of us and it gets psychedelic. Often it’s some combination of those.
Cam Malcolm (guitar, vocals) cut his teeth fronting Peterborough’s Sweet Homewreckers – their record From the Letdown to the Comearound had critics singing praises in harmony and it spawned a video for the infectious cut “Wild America”. Aaron Goldstein (guitar, vocals) is best known as one of Hamilton’s most visible sidemen, providing accompaniment on pedal steel and guitar to some of Southern Ontario’s finest singer/songwriters. Along with Adam Melnick (bass, vocals), he is a member of Dan Griffin’s Regrets and has played steel on dozens of Southern Ontario records over the past few years. Adam, in the meantime, has also proven himself a worthy sideman on bass and keyboards, having played recently with Kilhuminzu and Terra Lightfoot. And if that wasn’t enough, Pete Hall (drums, vocals) spent the better part of the last ten years co-fronting the epic A Northern Chorus, releasing four critically acclaimed records on Sonic Unyon and touring Canada, the US and the UK.

Julie Doiron

Here’s a bunch of words to describe Julie Doiron: happy, positive, hopeful, excited, and especially, rocking. Yes, you’re reading that right. In the past, people were used to reading things like sad, quiet, acoustic, thoughtful, and reflective. That all changes with her latest disc, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day. Meet the new Julie Doiron.

Julie Doiron’s always been pretty easy to figure out. More than any other songwriter, you can tell exactly what’s going on in her life, as she lays it all out in her lyrics. She’s direct, and painfully honest, but she can’t help it. “I just sing about what’s happening,” she admits, resigned to her style. “I don’t know how to do anything else. I don’t know how to write any other way. I’ve wanted to…I’ve tried! Because sometimes I feel like maybe I shouldn’t be so direct, but I don’t know how.” In the past, listeners have shared in the heartbreak ofloneliness, the break-up of a band, the grind of raising young kids, and the dark fears anyone can slip into during a relationship. While thedirect approach is still all over this new album, this time she’s almost the happiest woman in town.

Julie began her career in music in 1990 at the age of 18 in Moncton, NB, playing bass in Eric’s Trip, one of the most revered Canadian indie-rock groups ever. The first of many maritime Canadians signed to Sub Pop, Eric’s Trip found international recognition until their break-up in 1996. Julie’s gone on to have a successful solo career, collaborate with the amazing folk trio Daniel, Fred & Julie and she recently was awarded the 2010 CBC Radio 3 Lifetime Achievement Bucky Award.

One Hundred Dollars

Dubbed the urban denizens of Canada’s country music scene, One Hundred Dollars lends a window into what country music might have become had the industry not been overtaken by popular music production and trite subject matter. Simone Schmidt (voice), Ian Russell (accoustic guitar) and Stew Crookes (pedal steel) were set to release their first EP Hold It Together, in the summer of 2007, but leukemia got up in Russell’s blood. Holed up in the house for months together during the difficult chemotherapy protocol that followed, Schmidt and Russell took the time to craft more original tunes. Playing whenever the protocol allowed, they got a gig opening for Rick White (Eric’s Trip, Elevator), who invited them to record with him. Russell called on his former band mates from Jon-Rae & the River, David Clarke (the drums), Paul Mortimer, (bass- Kyle Porter took on bass duties in 2009, freeing Mortimer to assume his vocation as lead guitar) and Jonathan Adjemian (piano and organ) to lend some texture to the tunes.
The result was Forest of Tears, their first full length album on Blue Fog Recordings. Recorded in 13 hours at Elder Schoolhouse, Forest of Tears was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, and has garnered critical acclaim for its compelling story telling and masterful performances. Toronto Star’s Ben Rayner comments, “Forest of Tears heralds the arrival of Schmidt as a preternaturally gifted singer and lyricist, and of Russell as perhaps the only extant songwriting foil with the talent to make her dense, poetic diction sound effortlessly musical.” Critics have given One Hundred Dollars’ kind of country the prefixes “alt -”, “traditional”, “psych-”, “real,” alike, serving as testament to the band’s ability to draw all audiences- even those who think they hate Country – into the genre. The band has comfortably shared bills with Hardcore punk phenom Fucked Up, country roots songstress, Carolyn Mark, indie rock matriarch Julie Doiron and orchestral pop icon Owen Pallett[/b].
The band is currently working on a new album while releasing a series of singles as part of their “Regional 7 Inch” project. It sees vinyl 45′s released throughout the continent – the songs focus on subject matter that is regionally relevant to the place out of which the label is based. They are touring all over North America.

Richard Laviolette & The Oil Spills

Richard Laviolette writes a hundred songs a year. Songs of clever, heartfelt, rolling lyrics, sung in a strong, full voice. Echo and melody. Laviolette’s voice is a deep well of water. His lyrics are brilliant scraps of paper. Letters written home. He sings about death, anti-colonial struggle and long distance relationships.
All Your Raw Materials is Laviolette’s fourth album, and his first with The Oil Spills. Originally released independently on CD in September, 2009, the album was recorded live-off-the-floor at the legendary House of Miracles in London, ON the previous summer. Earlier this year, You’ve Changed Records was happy to make this album widely available and to offer it for the first time on LP.
The Oil Spills are Geordie Gordon (The Magic, Barmitzvah Brothers, Islands), Meredith Grant, Greg Denton, Mike Brooks (Gregory Pepper and his Problems, Kae Sun), Lisa Bozikovic, Matt Reeves, and Jenny Mitchell (Barmitzvah Brothers, The Burning Hell, Jenny Omnichord). The bridge that you must cross to meet your means to continue forward is governed only by the vulnerable sincerity in your desire to touch a soul and lift a spirit. For Mike O’Brien and Carlin Nicholson, a destined musical pairing known as Zeus, their new lofty pop and roll offering plans to do just that. For two kindred music men who feed on studio termites and work out the kinks on late night streetcar rides, there is only one who provides the force and guidance required to spawn such a special contribution. A force of nature that has been a spontaneous and spiritual ascension through the changing seasons of 2007/2008 Mike O’Brien and Carlin Nicholson came together as natural as do the pages of time turn. When they met in 1996, an unavoidable and uncontrollable musical field fire broke out. Over time and several separate musical endeavors, the persevering blaze pushed them to the edge of their own creative limits, presenting them together again, fiery-eyed and ready at the foot of the gate that would behold the kingdom of Zeus. The first recordings of the Zeus project came about without anticipation, agenda or even structure. Furiously and expeditiously, with the help of a tightly knit and brotherly foundation, the boys forged a bundle of compositions that now await the imminent approval of their higher power, which will then be unleashed unto the world, as Zeus. Mike and Carlin have spread their music to the world in other creative band efforts as well. Trading under the names the 6ixty 8ights, Paso Mino, and merging with friend strengths, the Golden Dogs and Major Grange, Zeus now bears the accumulated fruits of these experiences, but with something magical added. Mike and Carlin have discovered that for their particular brand of pop that rocks in the city (with a mistress in the country), there is only one way. Teamed up in managerial status with roots legend Jason Collett, Zeus plans to spread their words and music to the masses late this year. Giving a new twist to a good ol’ rock n’ roll sound with songs that hit you on impact, Zeus will occupy a presence that has been dormant since the golden age of precious melodies and 45s. Continuing on as naturally as when it began, bred from the love of music and symbiotic intuition, this undeniable body of work will crash down on traditional melody gluttons and hipsters alike, leaving non-believers to stand in the shadowed corners of Zeus’ musical gymnasium to look but not touch. The sky has opened for Zeus, making it a passage, not a limit. The enlightened, who knowingly follow, will be given the key. METZ

Toronto based noise-makers METZ demonstrate dangerously delicious, deliberately dogmatic delicacies of disturbing distortion. Their dour dedication to drastically disparate dissonance is delightfully documented on the dumbfounding discs “Soft Whiteout”/Lump Sums 7” and “Ripped on the Fence”/Dry Up 7” deservedly distributed daily by WE ARE BUSY BODIES. METZ are the best band in Toronto today.

PS I Love You

PS I Love You has been performing in Kingston, Ontario since 2006. The band was originally the solo vehicle for multi-instrumentalist Paul Saulnier. Paul has performed in everything from a country-rock band to improvised noise duo. PS I Love You was intended to be his experimental, sort of weird pop music outlet. He would play shows with guitar looping pedals and keyboards and lots and lots of gadgets and gimmicks. He later recruited Benjamin Nelson on drums to replace the often inconsistent Casio drum machine and was probably the best decision of Paul’s young adult life. All of a sudden PS I Love You’s weird little songs were becoming mini, soaring rock anthems! Soon thereafter, they formed a strong friendship with John O’ Regan (Diamond Rings, The D’urbervilles). The band soon released the split 7″ inch single with Diamond Rings,’ “All Yr Songs” as the a-side and PS I Love You’s “Facelove” as the b-side. The single saw an amazing response, and eventually sold out. The singles success took the young band by surprise. Soon thereafter, folks outside of Kingston began demanding the band travel and perform. This marked a new beginning for PS I Love You. They are are now a fully realized duo, and released their critically acclaimed debut album, Meet Me at the Muster Station earlier this year.

Rick White is a Canadian musician and singer-songwriter, originally from Moncton, NB. He was a member of rock ‘n’ roll bands Eric’s Trip, Elevator (previously Elevator to Hell and Elevator Through), Perplexus, and The Unintended. Renowned for his DIY aesthetic, as both a musician and stunning visual artist, he has also recorded, written, and/or produced music for The Sadies, Orange Glass, Joel Plaskett, One Hundred Dollars, Dog Day and his Eric’s Trip bandmate Julie Doiron. White released his first solo self-titled album (under the moniker “RickWhiteAlbum”) in late 2005. He followed it with Memoreaper in 2007. White’s latest album, 137 is a double album and was released in 2009 on Blue Fog records.

Grand Analog

Grand Analog is a raw collective created in 2006. Its members are seasoned record collectors, musicians and self described beat junkies from around the way. You can easily find each of these characters honing the role of DJ at various local pubs and clubs in Toronto or Winnipeg. Band leader and creator, Odario Williams, describes the Grand Analog sound as a beautiful mess of rap’n'roll, dub and soul. “Grand Analog is unbalanced and dirty; never clean. Grand Analog is fuzzy with three coats of dust and reads like an old manual no longer in use”. Calligraffiti, the debut album, has an array of soundscapes you can travel through: ‘Touch Your Toes’ boasts James Brown style drums, rock guitar and a New Orleans style horn break. ‘Around This Town’ can only be described as a ska-pop-hiphop joint and ‘Simmer Me Down’ carries a smooth infectious jazz-funk bump to it. The latest album entitled Metropolis Is Burning keeps these traditions alive by fine tuning what is now the Grand Analog sound.
Each character in this collective brings something unique to the table. Odario and DJ Ofield blame their father, a reggae DJ from the 80s, for cursing them with the love of music, bass and trouble. DJ Catalist on keyboards was also born into a musical family inheriting a few dusty analog keys for the lab (Arp Odyssey, Mini Korg K2, Sequential Circuits Six Trak, Roland Jupitor 6 among others). Warren Bray has a punk funk history and is now appointed GA’s doctor of bass while Damon Mitchell brings his guitar savvy to the recording process. The live show adds soul to the bloodline along with frequent stage jams and off the wall spontaneity.

D-Sisive

D-Sisive is a one man music machine cruising to the hum of his own engine. After last year’s triumphant return to the hip-hop limelight with both his Polaris Prize nominated gem Let The Children Die, and his second classic full length of 2009, the acclaimed Jonestown, one would think the accomplished Toronto MC would be content to rest on his ever-expanding laurels. Not D-Sisive. The enigmatic one is back – and this time taking things to an entirely new level with the epic Vaudeville.
Produced in tandem with Andrew ‘Fresh Kils’ Kilgour and featuring a surprise cameo from legendary Canadian songsmith, Ron Sexsmith, Vaudeville is filled with incredible hip hop tracks, and slight of hand tricks. Smoke and mirror gags mixed with punch lines, and intense stories. An album that showcases the wide variety of influences and themes which only an enigmatic master of ceremonies like D-Sisive could pull off.
Despite his prolific nature, it seems unlikely we’ll ever know everything that motivates D-Sisive. Still through all the smoke and mirrors, the tricks and the treats, it’s a love of rocking the microphone unlike few others today that sustains D-Sisive’s enduring appeal.

King Neptune & His Tridents is an all-star gathering of Guelph musicians, who first started playing cover songs together in 2003. The event was CFRU’s Glam Slam Ball, which was first popularized in Guelph in the early 90s, as a “fake prom” where young students and people waaaay past high school could get dressed up and party like there were no chaperones in the room. Rekindled seven years ago at the Ebar, the Glam Slam has gained new life as a hotly anticipated, annual, pre-Halloween bash that marries amazing music spanning many styles, genres, and decades, with dancing, formal wear, and a unique “prom” theme.
This 2010 Glam Slam incarnation of the band features Alison Bell-Smith, Andrew Collins, Bill Whitehead, Chris Hierlihy, Dave Withers Evan Gordon, Geordie Gordon, Jeff Munro, Jessy Bell Smith, Johnny Merritt, Jordan Howard, Tristan O’Malley, and Vish Khanna. Patrons are all encouraged to wear prom wear of course but dressing in some kind of Halloween costume would work just as well!

Sheezer (Toronto)

The world’s only all-female Weezer cover band is headed to Guelph. Sheezer is approved by Weezer themselves and play only songs from the 1994 classic “blue” album and 1996 fan favourite Pinkerton. Made up of Toronto musicians Laura Barrett (The Hidden Cameras / Laura Barrett), Dana Snell (Gentleman Reg / The Bicycles), Magali Meagher (The Phonemes), Robin Hatch (ex-Sports) and guitar shredder Alysha Haugen, Sheezer make a point of faithfully performing Weezer’s first two albums note-for-note.
Excitement for Sheezer was immediate and widespread. It started with a link from Weezer’s official blog, and a tweet about Sheezer from lead singer Rivers Cuomo. An interview in Spinner was picked up by USA Today, and the band has been featured in Exclaim, NOW Magazine, Eye Weekly and on several music blogs.
Sheezer’s debut show on New Year’s Eve 2010 sold out in advance, with a room full of Weezer fans shouting along to every song. The trend has continued through each subsequent show, with crowds getting larger and louder each time. Sheezer have blown minds of Weezer aficionados and non-fans alike, exceeding all expectations of any skeptics by showcasing their mastery of the hits. They have been working hard in continued efforts to electrify audiences with their feminine twist to some much-loved classics, and to stir up some 90s nostalgia. If Born Ruffians’ 2008 debut album Red Yellow and Blue was the result of a talented and precocious gang of freshmen, their 2010 follow-up, Say It, would be the project they left school to finish — a declaration that they’re smart and ambitious enough to make it on their own, and furthermore, that they’re in it for the long haul.

Taking two weeks to record the album, the band finds itself teaming up again with producer Rusty Santos.  The Ruffians and co. holed up at Mississauga’s Metalworks studio and loosed the reins on their ambitions, experimenting with Minimoogs and saxophones before eventually scaling much of it back in the mixing process. The result is a very mature album, further amplifying the band’s unique voice and sound, ready to take them as far as they want to go.

Fond of Tigers

Continent & Western–simultaneously more experimental and more accessible than previous Fond of Tigers releases–shows the band honing its unique blend of avant-garde textures and post-rock structures while expanding its range to include vocals and additional members. Toronto’s Sandro Perri (Constellation Records) lends vocals and lyrics to “Vitamin Meathawk”, while Swedish experimenter Mats Gustafsson brings his intense saxophone and electronics push to “Grandad”. Bandleader Stephen Lyons also takes the microphone for the lush, unhurried closing track, “Upheaval”.

While the textures and tonalities of experimental improv are still present, Continent & Western emphasizes song structure and melodic detail over some of the more esoteric directions taken on 2007’s Release the Saviours.

Called “post-everything”, Fond of Tigers have been developing their hypnotic and intense music since 2003. Since its origins as a solo project of guitarist Stephen Lyons, the group has expanded to include its signature double-drumkit attack and processed violin and trumpet textures along with the artfully layered hooks. Featuring seven of Vancouver’s leading creative musicians, Fond of Tigers play a layered, nuanced music that explores musical possibilities ranging from the smallest gesture of extended technique, to the full avant-rock bombast possible with a wild, double-drum-kit-led septet. The group has shared stages with Tortoise, Deerhoof, the Grande Mothers, Shad, Mats Gustafsson, Sandro Perri, Chad VanGaalen, and others. Notoriously hard to categorize, Fond of Tigers continue to evolve and explore a musical territory in the outlands of avant-rock.

Jim Guthrie

Jim Guthrie is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and home rock super hero. He has recorded both as a solo artist and as a member of the bands Islands, Royal City and Human Highway. He was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario, and currently lives in Toronto. Guthrie first made a name for himself by releasing a series of self-produced cassettes, and subsequently released albums on his namesake label, Three Gut Records. He was nominated for a Juno Award for his 2003 album Now, More Than Ever, which was recently released on vinyl for the first time. After a long hiatus, Guthrie has returned to live performance with a killer eight-piece band, known as his Litter. Jim is not unlike a cat in many ways.

The Minotaurs

Spearheaded by Nathan Lawr, the Minotaurs consists of current or ex-members of Rheostatics, Constantines, Holy Fuck and Royal City, among others. While Lawr is best known for working with artists like Constantines, Royal City, Jim Guthrie, FemBots and Feist, the Minotaurs have served as his solo songwriting outlet in recent years and he’s released some great records, such as 2007′s wonderful folk-pop affair, A Sea of Tiny Lights. It’s fair to say that his latest album, The Thing, speaks to his true musical passion and is unlike anything Lawr has ever explored publicly. In addition to Lawr, the Minotaurs are now made up of ex-Rheostatic and former Ron Sexsmith collaborator, Don Kerr, Holy Fuck/King Cobb Steelie’s Kevin Lynn, Jeremy Strachan of Canaille, Paul Aucoin of Hylozoists, and guitar-wielding brothers Dan and Ryan Levecque. Also lending a hand on the new record is Bry Webb of Constantines, who shows up for some guest guitar and vocals, and the Wooden Sky’s Gavin Gardiner, who lays down some guest vocals. On The Thing, the Minotaurs explore the sound of Fela Kuti’s funky Afrobeat, delivered from a heartfelt, indie sensibility. The result is a vibrant, spirited new turn for the gifted and adventurous music of Nathan Lawr. The Minotaurs’ The Thing is out August 17th on Static Clang Records.

Evan Gordon & The Sad Clowns

Over the past 15 years, Evan Gordon has made some of the most groundbreaking rock ‘n’ roll to ever come out of Canada. Gordon has left an indelible mark on early songs and records by Jim Guthrie, Royal City, Constantines, and even his father, folk singer James Gordon, all of whom have gone on to find audiences well beyond Wellington County. Now a member of such notable bands as the Magic, Islands, and the Skeletones Four, Evan’s been so busy that he’s neglected his own band, the Sad Clowns. All that changes with the dirty, sexy rock ‘n’ roll quintet’s first show in forever. If you like your classic rock from the future, don’t miss the return of Evan Gordon and the Sad Clowns.

Ian Blurton+Huron=Happy Endings

Huron is a rock ‘n’ roll band from Hamilton, Ontario. Formed in early 2008, by the end of that year they began tracking their debut record with producer Sir Ian Blurton (Weakerthans, Cursed, Amy Millan). The result will see the light of day this spring, on Latent Recordings/Fontana North. Huron describe it as “a big old southern-fried Sabbath riffin’ affair, with heavy nods to electric Neil Young, the Beatles and The Band. Sometimes the Floyd and the Dead get the better of us and it gets psychedelic. Often it’s some combination of those.” Most recently Huron have teamed up with Blurton to form a new band called Happy Endings. Best known for leading Change of Heart and C’mon, Blurton explores his love of heavy, psychedelic, stoner rock in Happy Endings. For the project’s new record, Blurton played almost every instrument on record himself, with the exception of a couple of appearances by Damon Richardson on drums. Scott from Raising the Fawn has a big vocal part on the record; Michael Thompson has an incredible trumpet part that lasts about 15 seconds but is unbelievably memorable; and Kevin Drew plays guitar. For this show, Huron will play their own set and then back Blurton up as Happy Endings.

Clues was founded by Alden Penner and Brendan Reed, both active for years in the Montreal music scene. Alden was one-half of Unicorns, a band that burned bright and fast at the beginning of the century, and Brendan has been a member of a number of groups, including the endless, Endless Forever. They began building Clues quietly and in near-secrecy during the summer of 2007, playing a series of unadvertised shows in small Montreal venues. Their early performances elicited passionate responses and made it clear that Alden had an awesome batch of new tunes in the works, a glorious voice to deliver them with, and a brilliant foil in Brendan as his co-conspirator.
By 2008, friends Ben Borden, Lisa Gamble, and Nick Scribner had been recruited from the Montreal art and music scenes; a few more exuberant shows went down, the sound building and strengthening every time. With the band’s foundations fully cemented, Clues began work on a debut record towards the end of the year.
During live shows and on recordings, the band share and trade-off on an extensive array of instruments and create a twitchy, urgent, utterly original music that expands Montreal’s (already diverse) pop music lexicon. Clues incorporates multiple drummers, horns, a table of fried electronics (including a Commodore 64 and an OLPC), saw and pianette alongside their trusty electric guitars and basses.
Through their founding and early work as a band, Clues has remained close to home, dedicated to collaborating with and supporting fellow independent artists. In 2008, Reed started VillaVillaNola, a digital music store featuring recordings by predominantly local artists who have flourished underground but who otherwise receive sparse attention. Strong ties to the independent music community, together with shared ideals, led Clues to collaborate with Montreal’s Constellation, who released the band’s debut record in May of 2009.

Etaoin Shrdlu

Featuring members of Rockets Red Glare, Weights and Measures, and I Can Put My Arm Back On You Can’t, the personnel list in Etaoin Shrdlu (there is no proper pronunciation) reads as an all-star lineup for the Southern Ontario post-hardcore scene. In the same way that their name is taken from a forgotten reference within the printing industry, the band was originally conceived as a side project to explore a style of instrumental music that was felt to be lost or abandoned by contemporary bands. The result is a series of songs that are precisely executed and riddled with tension, while still being heavy, groove oriented, and surprisingly catchy. Their new, debut album Mating Calls is one of the biggest sounding albums of the year!
